As the spider lilies flower, the crowds once again gather.
What happens?
If red is your favorite color, then mark this event on your calendar. As you’ll probably know from cherry blossoms in the spring and momiji (maple leaves) in the fall, the Japanese go 110% on seasonal plant life celebrations.
The red spider lily or manjushage (曼珠沙華), already a pretty little plant on its own, makes for an Instagram-winning blanket of color in the Kinchakuda fields in Hidaka, Saitama.
Tickets
It’s ¥500 to enter.
Keep in mind that these dates are only a guide, as the weather can affect the length of flowering — so aim for central dates if possible.
In 2025, the flowering is expected to be delayed due to extreme heat.
How to get there
From Ikebukuro Station, take the Ikebukuro line to Hanno. There, switch to the Seibu-Chichibu Line to Koma, then walk about 20 minutes to the venue. The whole journey takes about an hour and a half.
Another option is to hike to the fields from Hanno Station.
Free shuttle bus
The free shuttle bus for the Red Spider Lily Festival will run only on September 27–28 and October 4–5, with service every 30 minutes between 9 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.
It connects Koma Shrine and Kinchakuda, with free parking available at Koma Shrine.
