Acclaimed Portuguese filmmaker Pedro Costa brings his largest-ever Japanese exhibition to Tokyo, covering themes of migration, poverty, and resilience.
What to expect
Known for films like Vanda’s Room and Vitalina Varela, Pedro Costa’s work blurs the lines between documentary and fiction. This exhibition, marking the Tokyo Photographic Art Museum’s 30th anniversary, is his first large-scale museum show in Japan.
Step into immersive installations that scatter film sequences across space. Highlights include video works drawn from Vanda’s Room, Horse Money, and Casa de Lava, as well as Costa’s short film The Daughters of Fire.

Schedule
The exhibition runs from August 28 (Thursday) to December 7 (Sunday), 2025. Opening hours are from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., with extended hours until 8 p.m. on Thursdays and Fridays.
From August 28 to September 26, the museum will remain open until 9 p.m. (as part of the Summer Night Museums campaign).
Note that the museum is closed on Mondays, except when Monday falls on a public holiday, in which case it opens and closes the following day instead.
