Tokyo’s summer festivals are still prevelant as we get into the muggy heat of August.
Avoid the midday sun by exploring the evening merrymakings — there’s plenty to catch with Bon dances, fireworks, and street stalls open till late.
Asagaya Tanabata Festival
The Asagaya Tanabata Festival takes place every year in the Asagaya Pearl Center shopping street and is filled with dangling decorations and children’s cartoon characters. The festival was set up in 1954 by merchants seeking to increase their customers.
Hakone Ashinoko Summer Festival
Held every year, this summer nights festival incorporates a series of local festivals around the water’s edge of Lake Ashi in Hakone. Moto-Hakone is the center of festivities with food stalls and festival games to keep you entertained and in the spirit.
Minato Mirai Smart Fireworks Festival
The Minato Mirai Smart Fireworks Festival celebrates the charms of Yokohama. The fireworks will go off around 7:30 p.m. and last 25 minutes. As well as the main display, there are a host of other things happening.
Miura Beach Fireworks Festival
Come spring, Miura Kaigan is awash with pink. But in summer? It’s all about the fireworks. Now in its 45th edition, the event draws visitors to the beach for a spectacular half-hour of fireworks that light up the twilight sky over Sagami Bay.
Enoshima Summer Fireworks Festival
See a short fireworks show as part of the Miami Beach Show Summer Fireworks in Enoshima. A bonus if you’re already on a day trip from Tokyo.
Okutama Nōryō Fireworks Festival
The annual Okutama Nōryō Fireworks Festival is a tiny fireworks show by Tokyo standards — you can expect just under 1,000 fireworks — but it is in a beautiful natural setting.
Kumagaya Fireworks Festival
See a wonderful display of colors in the sky at the Kumagaya Fireworks Festival. This is one of the most popular fireworks festivals in Saitama.
Shimokitazawa Bon Dance Festival
Shimokitazawa is a tight but very welcoming community, so this festival (formerly known as the Shimokitazawa Summer Festival) draws in the locals as well as the many fans of the trendy neighborhood. There are plenty of refreshment options at the festival site.
Fussa Tanabata Festival
There will be a wide range of events centered around Fussa Station, such as performances and dances. Character shows and other events will also be held on a specially constructed stage at the Okano Plaza.
Kanda Shrine Anime Bon Odori Dance
The Kanda Myōjin Shrine Bon Odori combines a traditional Japanese summer festival and upbeat anime tunes for unique summer fun. The highlight of each day is a unique Bon Odori dance with a different theme. Friday’s dance (starting at 4:30 p.m.) is the most popular for its anime music and costumes, whereas the weekend dances are hosted by local cultural organizations.
Zama Sunflower Festival
See 550,000 bright yellow sunflowers in all their glory at the Zama Sunflower Festival, one of Tokyo’s most famous sunflower festivals. If that isn’t enough, there will also be local businesses selling food, agricultural products, and cut sunflowers.
Kōtō Fireworks Festival
The annual Kōtō Ward Fireworks Festival sees 6,000 fireworks go off — making it about a third of the size of Tokyo’s biggest fireworks festivals. It’s still a good, colorful show in a nice spot — Sunamachi Mizube Park, near the Arakawa River.
Red Brick Breeze
Yokohama Red Brick Warehouse is usually known for its annual German Christmas market, but it also has many events throughout the year, including this summer event. This year’s theme is the Mediterranean region, referencing destinations such as Greece and Spain.
