An evening event in which candle-lit lanterns are floated down the Sumida River.
What happens?
Tōrō nagashi is a tradition in which lanterns illuminated with candles are set afloat on rivers to guide the spirits of the ancestors back to the other side during the Obon holiday.
2,500 lanterns with handwritten messages are glided down a slope into the waters on the east side of the Sumida River (the Asakusa Station side — not the Skytree side) between Azuma-bashi bridge and Kototoi-bashi bridge at 6:30 p.m.

How to float a lantern
This year, you can either purchase a lantern on the day, from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. in front of the waterbus terminal, for ¥2,000, or buy it in advance for ¥1,700.
